If you or your loved one is diagnosed with any kind of disorder, it does not mean you have to put anyone’s life on hold; with the help of right treatment, therapy and tools, you can transcend from the life you think you are supposed to live and live a better life.
Break free from societal expectations
In the modern world, there is no one safe from diagnosis. It might be a boon if it is genetic or a congenital disorder. However, there are disorders like ADD, ADHD, autism, OCD when diagnosed in children; it is hard to explain whether it is a boon or a restriction which are just labeling. Before the development of these categories of disorders, when a child is hyperactive, he is just naughty. Nowadays, he is a special needs kid. However, it is better to diagnose them early in life to help them lead a successful, fully functional independent life as adults and they might be able to understand themselves better. For example, a dyslexic kid who was taught to differentiate and read using fun and interesting dyslexia reading books for kids and are slowly moved on to silent reading, is more likely to learn to read on their own and try harder whereby at some point he can live normally and sign contracts without needing someone else to read it over. Thus, it is essential to remember they are just unique and would need different form of reinforcement and teaching. This does not make them unintelligent.
Learning disabilities and attention disorders
There are several learning disabilities like dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADD, ADHD, autism, Asperger’s syndrome and the list grows on. Thanks to movies and series like ‘Like stars on earth’, ‘the good doctor’ and ‘Barfi!’ are creating awareness among people and therefore children are able to get the help required. It might be heart breaking for parents and loved ones to acknowledge that their child has a disability or disorder but denial is not helpful for anyone. Dyslexia is pervasive among young children and using reading books for dyslexic kids, shadow teachers in school, enrolling in special needs school and other forms of therapy might help them adapt much easier and cope with their disability. Apart from dyslexia, ADHD is prevalent, and with the right teaching methods, they can control their urges and try to improve themselves. It is important to ensure that the person treating your child is properly certified with appropriate credentials. There are too many frauds online and over diagnosis is a real thing. Therefore, it is important to make sure your kid gets the help they need and are not being exploited.
